Why you need to travel as a family

Many of us are told to “travel while we still can” insinuating that we won’t be able to travel once we have kids. This didn’t sit right with me and my husband. We vowed to at least try and see for ourselves and I am so glad we did because we found the opposite to be true! Not only is travel possible, but it can actually be beneficial. Here are five reasons why you should travel with your baby as a family.

  1. It creates a stronger family unit

With so many distractions now to keep us from spending time together, it can be hard to form those strong familial bonds that once held society together. The rate of divorce is higher than it’s ever been and this wears on the mental health of both the parents and the children involved. The answer seems so simple: spend more time together. When you travel as a family, it encourages this bonding within families. Think of it as one big team-building exercise. The novelty of traveling helps get everyone out of their ruts and the challenges encountered offer opportunities for connection.

  1. It can help their adaptability

Adaptability is a human survival skill developed over thousands of years. We as humans cannot help but to adapt to our surroundings. Exposing babies and children to new surroundings can help them learn to expect the unexpected and cope in new environments.

  1. It may help their development and lead to them doing better in school and, eventually, in their careers

Several studies of students and teachers showed students who traveled did better in school and were more likely to go on to further education.

  1. It can improve the quality of relationships

There is a saying that if you want to know a person, take a trip with them. And studies show this to be true. Taking trips together improves understanding of one another. This would be true for anyone who travels, not just parents and babies. But research also shows that babies who had strong relationships with their parents also developed strong relationships throughout their lives including with future partners, friends, and other family members.

  1. It can increase overall happiness and quality of life

Again, travel takes us out of our routines and gives us a break from the stress of everyday life. Travel has also been shown to increase the quality in life satisfaction.

While it can be hard, being able to get out and travel with my family has saved me from completely losing myself and has allowed me to enjoy parenthood so much more. The freedom reminds me that my life is not over, but is only just beginning. And now we get to share the beautiful gift of travel with our baby.
