Choosing a seat when flying with a baby

Flying with a baby is definitely a bit more challenging than flying alone, but with a bit of planning and strategy, you can eliminate a lot of the stress straight away. Having a good strategy when choosing where and how you’ll sit on your flight is a massive part of that. I have flown hundreds of flights pre-baby and now I get to fly with my little one. Here are a few tips I implement in my own travels!

Seat options for flying with a baby

There are actually quite a few options when traveling with your baby.

Infant-on-lap

Under two, the most popular and cheapest option is the infant-on-lap option that most airlines offer. As it says on the tin, an infant-on-lap ticket allows your child to sit on your lap for the whole flight. This ticket does not allocate them a meal nor does it allow them to bring a carry-on (although there are baby-specific items you can bring regardless of your seating option).

Infant-in seat

Another seat option for under two is the infant-in-seat option. This is popular because it allows your child to sit in an airline-approved car seat. It is also offered at a slightly discounted price compared to a normal seat. While this usually isn’t mandatory, it is the safest option for traveling with your child. Other options would include an airline-approved harness or simply letting your child sit in the seat on their own. Please note that airlines will all have their own policies on what is allowed for taxi, takeoff, and landing. Be sure to ask a flight attendant or do research ahead of time to know what to expect from your specific airline.

Bassinet

Last, but certainly not least, are the bassinet seats. These seats are generally situated at the bulkhead row since the bassinets affix to the bulkhead (the wall that separates classes). While you will not be charged to use the bassinet, most airlines will charge you a premium fare to book this bulkhead row seat. This is because they are usually sold for a premium fare due to the extra legroom. Bassinets are first come first serve so let the agents know at check-in that you intend to use a bassinet. Some business and first-class products also have bassinet seats so don’t be afraid to upgrade!

Window or Aisle when flying with a baby

If you have ever flown before, you probably have a preference. I don’t think anyone has a preference for the middle seat although, if that’s you, to each their own. Let me share my preference on window or aisle from a parent perspective.

For the vast majority of flights, I will recommend choosing an aisle seat for yourself meaning your child’s seat or an empty seat your child can sit in would be between you and the window. This is helpful for keeping wiggly babies (and their toys) contained and ensures you have access to the aisle for walkabouts and bathroom trips. Airlines will also sometimes require children’s seats be the window seat for safety reasons.

There are many different preferences when choosing seats but I hope this overview helps you gain a perspective on how to choose seats while flying with a baby. It certainly is a different experience but can also be so memorable, especially when it means you get to enjoy a wonderful holiday with your family.
